An electrician franchise is a licence to run an electrical contracting business under somebody else's brand and operating system. It sits inside the wider home services category and it has one feature that most of that category does not.
The trade licence is separate, and it is not optional
Electrical work is regulated. The authority that issues the licence, the qualifications it requires, and the scope of work it permits are all set by the jurisdiction the work happens in, and none of that is affected by a franchise agreement.
A franchisor cannot grant you a trade licence and cannot practise on one. Either the operator holds the qualification or the business employs somebody who does, and that requirement sits alongside the franchise rather than inside it. Any system implying otherwise has misunderstood its own category.
What the franchise adds
Given the trade competence is already required, the franchisor's contribution has to be everything around it. In practice that means the parts of the business a working electrician has the least time to build.
- Demand generation, so the calendar is not dependent on word of mouth and whoever happens to call.
- Pricing structure, so quoting is consistent rather than reinvented per job by whoever is on site.
- Dispatch and scheduling, which is the constraint the moment there is more than one van.
- Recruitment and training pathways, because licensed people are the binding limit on growth in this trade.
- Back office: invoicing, collections, and the reporting that tells you whether any of it is working.
None of that is glamorous and all of it is the actual business. It is also why the obligations item in a disclosure document matters more in this category than the brand name does.
What to ask a franchisor in this trade specifically
- How does the system handle licensing requirements that differ between jurisdictions.
- Who is responsible for compliance with the local code and permitting process.
- What happens to the business if the licence holder leaves.
- How are technicians trained to the brand standard, and by whom.
- What does the system do about warranty and callback work.
